Joint Efforts to Find American Citizen
The Embassy of the United States has been cooperating with the Government of Costa Rica and the Costa Rican Red Cross in the search for American citizen, David Gimelfarb, who has been missing since August 11, 2009 when he went hiking in Rincon de la Vieja National Park.
The Costa Rican search effort began on Wednesday, August 12. At the request of the Department of State, the U. S. Southern Command deployed two Blackhawk helicopters to assist in the search for Mr. Gimelfarb. These helicopters and their crews are part of the Joint Task Force Bravo Company based in Honduras. They arrived in Liberia, Costa Rica on August 19 and began search and rescue operations on August 20 and are coordinating efforts with the Costa Rican Red Cross.
The U.S. Southern Command often provides humanitarian assistance to Central American countries as it did in January 2009, after the Cinchona earthquake in Costa Rica.
With the support of U.S. military personnel and the Costa Rican Red Cross, we will do everything possible to locate Mr. Gimelfarb.
This message will be regularly updated as we receive reports from those conducting the
search
