Ambassador Cianchette presents his credentials
United States Ambassador Peter Cianchette, presented his credentials this afternoon to President Oscar Arias and to Minister Rodrigo Arias.
Following the presentation of credentials Ambassador Cianchette remarked:
“It is a tremendous honor and a great pleasure to be here today. Moments ago, I concluded a meeting with President Arias and Minister Rodrigo Arias to present my credentials as the 56th U.S. Ambassador to Costa Rica.
My journey to this position in Costa Rica has truly been a most humbling experience. I am grateful for the confidence that my country placed in me, and believe that my past public service and business experience have prepared me well to stand before you today. I look forward to drawing on these professional experiences to deepen the relationship that our two countries enjoy.
In fact, in our meeting, I told President Arias that I would do everything in my power to strengthen our close partnership, and to take it to new levels that benefit people here in Costa Rica and in the U.S.
Costa Rica is a friend and an ally, and I look forward to getting to know the political leaders, opinion leaders, members of the business community, the media, and indeed people throughout this beautiful country. I can tell you that my family is equally eager to know Costa Rica and its friendly people.
Costa Rica is a country that I truly admire for its commitment to democracy, human rights, and the environment. Costa Rica’s investment in its people, from education to healthcare, is admirable and I believe should serve as an inspiration for so many other nations.
With all its great achievements, and like other democracies (including the United States), Costa Rica is facing new challenges such as drug trafficking and domestic crime. I plan to continue our joint efforts to increase security and promote increased prosperity for both Costa Ricans and Americans.
Finally, I would like to note that the U.S. enjoys excellent trade relations with Costa Rica, and I look forward to enhanced trade, investment, tourism and economic cooperation under the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA).”
