CAFTA

Central American-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR)

The following countries signed CAFTA-DR in 2004 to be used as a tool to increase economic development, reduce the level of poverty, and support democratic principles:

  • Costa Rica
  • The Dominican Republic
  • El Salvador
  • Guatemala
  • Nicaragua
  • Honduras
  • The United States

In general, the agreement makes permanent the access of these countries’ products to the largest market in the world—that of the United States. The agreement will also remove many tariffs that now exist on U.S. manufactured goods that enter these countries

Costa Rica entered into force on January 1, 2009.
