“Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it.” U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Julie Schechter Torres closed her remarks with this quote from Marian Wright Edelman at the Embassy’s yearly networking event with 300 alumni of U.S. government education exchange programs, promising better communication with this distinguished community in the coming year.
The Embassy would like to thank Vice President Liberman and the 300 alumni of U.S. government education exchange programs who joined us on November 16 to celebrate International Education Week. The Vice President spoke about his experiences as a student at the University of Illinois and about the value of international education. U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Julie Schechter-Torres emphasized that this year the Embassy will improve networking with our alumni by sending more information on events and opportunities for joint programs, as well as by seeking their views on our activities. The celebration also heard eloquent speeches from some of our youngest alumni -- a teenage graduate of the Access English scholarship program and a university student who participated in the Community College Initiative. The Fulbright Alumni Association shared its outstanding success in a water conservation and English teaching program in Tres Rios and a number of alumni joined a regional Fulbright alumni program that offers mentoring to high school students throughout the region.
