U.S. Ambassador Anne Andrew commemorated the 10th Anniversary of the September 11th attacks in a ceremony at the memorial monument in La Sabana. Joining Ambassador Andrew were the Minister of Public Security Mario Zamora, San Jose Mayor Johnny Araya, representatives from the diplomat corps, Costa Rican police and firefighters, and American military veterans and citizens.

In her speech, the Ambassador emphasized that, “this memorial, this ceremony is to mark a day of remembrance and a time to honor all who were lost in the 9/11 attacks… Today, the 10th anniversary, is also a Day of Reflection…On this day of Reflection, we honor those Americans and their selfless contribution to our security. We also recognize so many Americans who were inspired by 9/11 to serve their country or their communities through public service or volunteerism… As I look at this memorial before us—I am reminded of the bravery of those first responders on 9/11—the police, the firefighters and paramedics—who risked their lives to help save so many. I want to personally thank the many Costa Rican firefighters and police with us today to pay your respects to, and to stand in solidarity with, those first responders who died on 9/11.  You all demonstrate the same amazing bravery as you continue every day to respond to the needs of the citizens impacted by disasters and violence.”
